About the Conference

The 5th International Conference on Creative Expression, Communication and Dementia is being held at the Penticton Lakeside Resort in Penticton, BC, Canada, October 1 & 2, 2010, with pre-conference workshops on September 30, 2010. The overall theme of the conference is Health, Aging and the Creative Arts.

The conference welcomes the participation of academics, researchers, practitioners and the public at large. It provides an excellent opportunity for networking, exchanging ideas and gaining insights into new trends and developments that can improve the lives of well seniors and seniors with cognitive impairments.

About the Presentations

We are looking for submissions related to:

1. The evaluation of creative expression programs in aging and in dementia care
The processes that have proved successful in identifying the needs of well clients and seniors with dementia using for example, programs such as life review, storytelling, reminiscence, music, drama and dancing as well as the use of specific evaluation tools to identify those needs.

2. The expression of imagination in aging
How is imagination used by well older adults and people with dementia as they express their personal, cultural and spiritual experiences? Practitioners -- recreation, art, music, dance, drama and occupational therapists and facilitators – are encouraged to discuss the design and implementation of activity or program (or changes in activities or programs) and/or on how those have affected their clients.

3. Raising the bar of caring within organisations
How do creative approaches and the arts enhance satisfaction, teamwork and organizations? Administrators and care managers are encouraged to share their innovative solutions, programs and achievements.

Presentation Formats

  1. Individual Presentation: one presenter
  2. Panel: up to 3 presenters chaired by a fourth person. All submissions relate to an overall theme.
  3. Workshop: Presenter gives hands-on demonstration; participants get instructions and take part
  4. Poster Presentation: Materials are displayed on one or two 30”X 40” sturdy presentation boards such as Foamcore or Coroplast, with two perforated opening on the top for hanging.

To Present at the Conference

  1. Select one of the conference themes
  2. Select a presentation format
  3. Submit an abstract of up to 200 words
  4. Include presenters’ names
  5. Include short biographies of presenters up to 50 words for each presenter
  6. Submission fee of $ 25 dollars due at the time of abstract submission. This does not apply to poster submissions. Paid fees of accepted abstracts will be put towards the conference registration fees

Important Notes:

  1. Submit only names of presenters who plan to attend the conference
  2. Please make your submission electronically in MS Word Format (97 Version or later).
  3. Closing date for submissions May 31, 2010 at midnight
  4. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by e-mail by June 15, 2010
  5. Deadline for conference registration for successful abstract submissions June 30, 2010
  6. Submission fee is not refundable
